Jeremiah Dixon was a pioneer of his time in his desire to explore and go beyond his knowledge and that of his teachers. This led him to undertake one of the most challenging and ground-breaking projects of the 18th century, the survey of the boundary between Maryland and Pennsylvania in North America, forever associated with him through its title, the Mason-Dixon Line. The 250th anniversary of the start of this remarkable task, in 1763, is the inspiration behind this catalogue and the exhibition, Jeremiah Dixon: Scientist, Surveyor and Stargazer, held at the Bowes Museum from 27th April to 6th October 2013.
