The story is about the inner lives of women and how the men who almost literally surround them have no clue or insight concerning what these women are experiencing or feeling. Slowly, but with great confidence, the story shows us the growing bond between the narrator and her boyfriend's mother, Ruth, who are both suffering in mutually distinct ways.
The narrator seems to be falling out of love with Luke, her boyfriend, and Ruth . .
. well, she’s distracted and distant, but she warms to the narrator anyway, as the narrator does to her.
