The nine stories that comprise Goblin Fruit all take place in and around the authors native Los Angeles. Each explores the theme of identity. In the title story a young actor takes on the identity of his dead sibling; Brilliant Disguise tells the story of an Asian American masked wrestler; Lost Years tracks two brothers who adopt false names while on the run from authorities. Other stories see boys yearning to be detectives, or the seven Chinese brothers transforming into seven swans. These are graceful tales of place, identity, and young lives in flux from the winner of the Columbia Fiction Prize. All are told in a distinctive voice shaped by the pop dreams and cultural divide that is the city of angels.
