For centuries, Monitors have walked among us, studying us. We had nothing they wanted, and we were too primitive to interact with them as equals, but from time to time, we showed promise. When Yellowstone was about to erupt in a mega-volcano, the Monitors decided to observe inevitable cultural changes. Even for a species who were engineering their own genome for over a million years, watching a planet-wide cataclysm is a rare opportunity. More Monitors were sent to observe the American hegemony struggle for survival.
To do so, they would need the cooperation of their neighbors, if they could be trusted. Told from the point of view of both a Monitor and a human in a town in central California, humanity's struggle is reported as it happens. With unexpected resilience and mutual respect, the cooperative efforts made by everyone involved create an unexpected saga during interesting times.
This is the first of the Monitor series.
